    Assistant Coach Ivan Cohen and members of the 2014 German National Team staff demonstrate 13 fundamental goalkeeping drills that Team Germany used to prepare for the 2014 World Games.

    Beginning with the proper stance and hand position on the stick, Coach Cohen demonstrates how the goalie stick should be held. He shares ways to reduce rebounds and track down the shot. Using a series of drills - from a simple ball toss to situational toss to using the handle of a short stick - Coach Cohen offers a step-by-step discussion on how to successfully increase hand eye coordination while adding a conditioning element.

    Coach Cohen shares a series of six drills designed progressively warm-up the goalie. He begins by having the shooter move back and forth on an arc about 8-10 yards away shooting five shots each systematically working high to low and strong hand to offhand. These drills focus on handling different shots from different angles using body placement to handle every type of shot. Shot angles include corner shots, time and room, bounce shots and shots coming from around the corner and inside.

    Coach Cohen puts goalies through a series of breakout passing drills throwing long and outside to on a line to the inside while under pressure. He uses basic field player triangle catching drills to train goalies how to switch hands. Finally, he shows how to play when pressed on the clear and how to reduce the chance for mistakes.

    Any coach or player can instantly transfer these drills to their own team to increase the skills and performance of their goalies.

    Coach Tiffany has a great understanding of what it takes to be great on defense - he was a 2-time team captain and starter on defense for three years under Dom Starsia (now niversity of Virginia head coach) at Brown. Good communication between the six defensemen and the goalie are required to create strong team defense. The goalie's only goal is to watch the ball and communicate to the on ball defender. The off ball defenders determine the slides. The 'hot player' designates himself as 'hot' and asks his teammates to fill and second slide. Other verbal calls dictate the slide patterns: crease/crease, crease/adjacent, adjacent/adjacent, and cross crease. Slide scheme development starts with the 1 v 1 decision-making drill and progresses to a full catalog of drills that include 2 v 1, 2 v 2 with an outlet, etc. On the field, Tiffany begins with on ball play. Decision-making is the key part of team scheme development. The first slide, second slide, third slide and recovery are all demonstrated in drills on the field. The DVD finishes with game clips of 6 v 6 defense, demonstrating a variety of slide packages.

    Head Coach J.B. Clarke gives an all-access look at proven techniques and philosophies as his team prepare for another season. Coach Clarke's explanations will help you appreciate the reasons each drill and exercise is used in the practice. As coaches explain proper technique and their proven philosophies, you will understand what each drill will accomplish.

    Practice 1
    The first practice session begins on the field with partner passing. In an effort to challenge players, each partner in the passing lines has a ball, which is passed simultaneously to their partners. When both players are each passing a ball, more focus and concentration is required to correctly time throws between the players.

    After a quick run and stretches, practice moves to team drills. Beginning with a 2-on-2 drill, two sets of players recover a ground ball. Defensively, the expectation is to double the ball. Offensively, players need to recover the ground ball and then move it effectively through the double coverage to score.

    The 2-on-2 progresses to various man-up drills. Each drill focuses on a narrow set of specific conditions and includes a specific set of restrictions. This might include limiting the field size or limiting where players can shoot from or move to.

    Coach's Meeting
    Watch as Coach Clarke and his staff construct a practice. The "all access" nature of this presentation is underscored by the candid discussions of the coaching staff. Not only does Coach Clarke discuss the mechanics of each drill, he also explains why it's being run and how it fits with the goals of the practice session. The goal is not to become better at performing the drill, but to become a better lacrosse player by applying learned skills to game situations.

    Coach Clarke's commentary is as useful as watching the drills themselves. Viewers get a unique insight into not only the practice itself but the planning, coaching tips and constant assessment that is going on during the practice.

    Strength Training
    Moving into the weight room, Curt Lamb, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Limestone College, explains the use of multi-joint movements to make lacrosse players stronger and more powerful. Olympic motions as well as ground-based movement encompass the majority of the lifting exercises. All of the weight room exercises were chosen for their maximum impact specific to lacrosse players. As a whole, the exercises are meant to facilitate strength and conditioning while also helping to minimize injuries.

    Practice 2
    Practice two begins on the field with the Gaffney Cup, a small-sided game exercise. Designed to be a customizable scrimmage, the Gaffney Cup is primarily an offensive drill that encourages competitiveness. The rules can be changed to force certain behaviors such as insisting on a pass before shooting on net, not allowing the ball handler to run with the ball or it can be used as a reward to allow players to play longer. This is a fun exercise that lets players try things they may not feel comfortable trying in other practice settings. As a coaching tool, it gives coaches the opportunity to evaluate players in a less structured setting.

    On-field practice continues with scoring drills. In the Georgetown Prep scoring drill, players shoot from three different positions at five-yard increments. This drill is used to encourage specific habits.

    The Fire drill works on defensive communication. Working from various defensive formations, the goalie calls out "here's the ball" and after the slide, returning to the location called out by the goalie. There's enough instruction to clearly define the foundation of this defensive formation as well as the philosophy of how this drill fits into the game situation. Therefore, the fire drill can be tailored to suit the needs of any team playing at any level.

    Coach Clarke shares a great template for a Clearing Stick Work drill. The goalie, who has the best view of the field, is responsible for communication. He directs two of the long pole defensemen to move the ball depending on how and where the attackmen are playing. Clearing the ball is covered in several different drills-sometimes the advantage is given to the clearing team, sometimes to the team that is riding. In every variation of the clearing drills shown, Coach Clarke's basic clearing philosophy is continuously reinforced.

    This video set is detailed enough to be repeatedly studied and viewed. The drills coupled with the insight shown in this presentation can be applied as part or whole to help provide a solid foundation for any level of lacrosse. This series will improve your understanding of lacrosse and leave you better prepared as a coach or player.

    The Clamp
    Utilizing a low stance and sinking your hips for leverage, Coach Scudder emphasizes the most important rule concerning the positioning of your top rail for winning the clamp. To support this movement, the mechanics are carefully explained while they are performed first slowly then more quickly with each successful repetition. Successful completion of this technique is apparent when superior leverage beginning with first contact is demonstrated.     The Jam and Re-Jam
    The initial move over the ball is crucial to be able to win a face off with a jam. Leading to that first move is the discipline necessary to consistently maintain a low and explosive position in an effort to catch your opponent off guard. Remaining vigilant against your opponent may allow you to re-jam your opponent in an effort to keep him guessing at what you will do.

    Face Off Drills
    Coach Scudder shares several drills to reinforce face-off mechanics and improve wing play, including:

    • Whistle Timing Drill - Helps player get comfortable at spending longer time in their ready stance.
    • Ball Bucket Pops - Building the skill of popping the ball forward. Perform an individual face-off, pick up ground ball and place ball into bucket.
    • Smasher Pad Ground Balls - Perform an individual face-off, pick up ground ball and then coach pressures you with a blocking pad.

    This presentation also includes a drill for training wing players to box out and pick up ground balls off the face off.

    Scoring in a settled 6-on-6 situation is very difficult. Mike Daly places a major emphasis on attacking in all other situations - especially transition. Every drill and decision made on the field is based on an up tempo, attacking style of play.

    In this on-field DVD presentation, Daly shares key transition drills you can use to create an up-tempo culture in your program.

    The drills covered involve both full- and half-field sets and not only emphasize the up-tempo philosophy but also work on the players stick skills and fundamentals.

    Beginning with the a series of wall ball reps to build confidence and skills, Coach Surman shares stick-handling drills to help with fielding ground balls, passing and check motions.     Day 2: Pick play, working off the ball, shooting and deep clearing, defense, picks, sub box, skeleton for sideline clear, 6-on-6 slide, and more.

    Day 3: Zone defense - using the different zones, rolling down field versus up field, 1-4-1 Power set with a roll or carry call, face-offs, scooping, ride clear scrimmage, zone offense/defense scrimmage, and more.

The 2-2-2 allows you to maximize the ability of all your players, breaking them into three separate groups to attack as a unit behind the goal, in the crease and up top.

    In this on-field DVD, Coach Stagnitta shows you his progression for building his 2-2-2 offense. This easy-to-follow progression works the team as three groups before bringing it all together.

    Warm-up Drills
    Learn warm-up drills that will get your entire team involved (including the goalies). These fast paced drills move up and down the field to simulate an unsettled situation. This is an excellent drill that combines a number of line drills with one full-field drill that lets you see the entire field at once.

    In addition, Stagnitta runs his players through a 2-man Shooting Drill. This is a two-part drill that puts players in dodge and shoot situations they will find themselves in in a 2-2-2 offense:

    Part 1) works the behind the net and up top players. The focus is to work together to balance the field and shorten the pass lanes. This teaches the players to follow, throw the ball against pressure, dodge hard and understand spacing.
    Part 2) works with the players inside focusing on timing of cuts, spacing and finishing from the inside (sealing, quick release).

    Building a 2-2-2 Offense
    The warm up drills take Stagnitta into his 5 Drills for Building the 2-2-2 Offense. These drills help build the offensive system of play, but also work your defensive play. The drills are shown live on the field with his team as Coach Stagnitta talks you through the drills and the principles for the offense.

    • DRILL 1 -
    • Live 2-on-2: Step one of breaking down the 2-2-2. This drill takes the shooting drill to the next level - having the the high and low players work together as a unit. Focuses on keeping the offense balanced with proper spacing between the two players, setting and using three types of picks and dodging hard and quick to create a lane or a shot. This allows you to work on two spots - the high and low, as well as defense - on one side of the field.
    • DRILL 2 -
    • Live 4-on-4: (Perimeter Balance): The next step in building the 2-2-2 is putting the top and bottom players together so each group understands what the other is doing when they are attacking. This drill focuses on balancing the perimeter, spacing (opening up) and reading the dodge. Here, you incorporate slides and reads, which forces your offensive units to adjust accordingly. Also, in a 2-2-2 the passing lanes can be long, so this drill helps the offense close those lanes to make easier, safer passes.
    • DRILL 3 -
    • Live 4-on-4 (Inside Crease): Here you start live crease play by adding the two midfielders to the two attackmen. Working on the two attackmen and their three pick options, the two middies focus on sealing their man and popping outside, creating opportunity for the inside (that may open up shots for the attackmen behind). The drill also works on timing, cutting and reading the lanes.
    • DRILL 4 -
    • Survivor Drill: This drill places all four corners and the inside players together to focus on inside play. This drill is great at breaking down inside play and helping the perimeter players find open teammates inside. This also teaches the inside players where to set themselves based on ball movement on the outside. Finally, it forces the inside players to handle the ball in "tough" situations, and trains them to move with a purpose, opening dodging lanes and taking away the defensive slides.
    • DRILL 5 -
    • Live 6-on-6: The final drill pulls all three two-man games together with a live defense, allowing you to rotate your team from offense and defense. This drill also helps develop the push-pull offensive concepts used to balance the field, all in a game-like setting.

    The 2-2-2 Offense is not a scripted offense - a lot of things can happen depending on how the defense reacts or what happens when you first dodge. By incorporating these progressive drills through the two-man games it allows your players to read and practice many different situations so they'll be ready to execute during game time.

    Using whiteboard instruction and live practice footage, Ricky Fried shares the philosophy behind his riding technique and drills for improving it. In addition to lacrosse fundamentals, Coach Fried demonstrates these competitive techniques:

    The DVD opens with Coach Fried's adjustments to 1-on-1 passing and speed passing techniques. Stick position, footwork and hand position are emphasized. Correct hand and stick position while passing is emphasized. These techniques are reinforced during the speed passing drills.

    Attack players and defenders are broken into their respective groups. Coach Fried starts with the defensive players working on 1v1 fundamentals for footwork and body positioning. He emphasizes fundamentals specific to covering the ball carrier and controlling the attacker in order to dictate where the attacker can move.

    The remainder of the DVD focuses on riding techniques. Coach Fried's philosophy is to make the other team members work as hard as possible to clear the ball; it's not necessarily about causing a turnover.

    Coach Fried's techniques can be tweaked to your team's strengths and needs. There are several ways to maximize the pressure placed on the clearing team. With the drills presented here, you will learn how to set up your ride to force the other team to send the ball where you want it to be sent. You'll also learn how certain aspects of the riding technique can be used when players are working on clearing passes.

    By applying the defensive techniques learned earlier and operating under this specific riding philosophy, your team will be able to better determine where your opponents can move the ball, thus diminishing fast breaks and disrupting offensive plays.
